If this isn't variety - you're the greatest denier! Ud 26/04/14

Variety is the cloves of living.

You’ve come to the right place stranger.

I have it with interest and in abundance.

Be prepared for the spectacular, which offers a virtual guarantee everybody will want you on their pub quiz team.  It will allow you to show off to nobody in particular and be the ultimate trivia terror.

Just remember where your knowledge came from?

Honestly, you little tinkers are in for a treat more royal than any blue.

Acts of plagiarism, amazing refs, irreverent humour, things you’ve never heard or thought of before will all be commonplace.

So as long as you eat and drink and/or live and breathe films, games, songs, albums and more, you’re gonna love this, as all will be under the spotlight.

Nothing can, ever or will free themselves from the sternest of stares.

You will now know how Ray Liotta felt as he had No Escape either.

It’s already begun, but that’s an easy one, but sets the standard for later.

Of course there are trivia heads and those full of pointless information, but they’re amateurs...

Before you Google, first you have to know and how to search for obscurity – sounds simple?

It’s really not.

The less obvious stuff I relate and/or make refs to are sometimes extremely hard to find, unless you know exactly what you’re looking for....

If you dare doubt me, talk to the crew of the Enterprise and they’d advise against it.

I don’t apologise for confidence and if anybody can put their hand on their good heart and say I knew everything what I’ve just read here – bravo.

But to back that up, could you put your hand on the good book and swear an oath in front of the Almighty to that effect?

Leave that with you...

I appreciate that some stuff is well known, but just in case – it’s covered anyway.  My aim is not to tread over old ground but rather put my great dirty paws all over new material and I’m hoping the majority will marvel at the incredible factual think-tank listed here.

It begins.

A ripped riff from the T-Rex classic Get it On from 1971, listen to the first 20s.

After which, include Oasis’ Cigarettes and Alcohol (1994) up to the first 30s

Rolling Stones’ It’s only Rock and Roll (1974) also sounds like it but it’s not as obvious.

Listen to Imagine and the iconic Lennon on the piano
Oasis again and Don’t Look Back in Anger in 1996
Also the name Wonderwall in 1995 was nicked from Wonderwall Music from George Harrison’s 1968 debut solo album.
Pink Floyd’s The Happiest Days of our Lives is from their amazing 1979 album The Wall.  Take a few seconds from 6s to 32s and listen out for the helicopter.
Then Oasis and Morning Glory 1996 from 0s to 46s.  Hear a similar sound?
Incredibly, maybe Oasis didn’t even know?
Listen to The Air That I Breathe by The Hollies (1973)
Then have a listen to Radiohead’s breakthrough single – Creep either in 1992 (single) or in 1993 on their debut album, Pablo Honey.
So having done so, notice the similar slow guitar, drums and how it’s sung...
Led Zeppelin’s Going to California.
Then listen to this:
Pearl Jam’s Given to Fly is clearly ripped from the above.
So that’s some Kinks, sorry links.
We continue now with similar shit.
Original - Queen and David Bowie: Under Pressure
Rip off - Vanilla Ice: Ice Ice baby
Original Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-da, The Beatles – 1968.
Rip off - The Offspring’s Why Don’t You Get a Job (1998).  Exactly the same tune but different words.
Notice how the chorus is sang – awful.
Original - The Supremes and You Can’t Hurry Love
Rip off is Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life in 1977.
And then Jet’s Are You Gonna Be My Girl which is similar to Lust for Life.
But both songs rip the same drum beat.
So logic suggests that Jet’s effort was ripped from Lust for Life tune, which it was, but Iggy Pop and Lust ripped from YCHL so they’re both ripping from the Supremes.
I appreciate that many people:
a) may not have heard of Lust for Life and think Girl was a totally original song
b) think that Lust was the original and more realistically;
c) have never heard of You Can’t Hurry Love.
Original - Chuck Berry’s Sweet Little Sixteen.
The appalling rip off was Beach Boys’ Surfin’ USA.
The supreme granddaddy of jumping on the heads of enemies to squash them is of course Super Mario Bros and incredible balls was shown by The Great Giana Sisters, as they basically created the same game with, well sisters.
The X-Men is among the most famous comic strip of all time and naturally it spawned films and numerous games.  But who’d have thought that even this is a rip-off of comic The Doom Patrol.

Who talks of Doom Patrol though?
Disney’s The Lion King, awwww cute isn’t it?  Well no, as I hate it so it’s great to lay into it as Disney knew that they’d blatantly ripped off Kimba the White Lion.
This was a forgotten Japanese cartoon from the 60s.  Even chars and scenes were nicked, I display the shameless:

You’ve heard of the bunny boiler, yer’ know Alex Forest (Glenn Close) from the very decent 1987 psychological thriller Fatal Attraction.  It sees lawyer Michael Douglas have a bit of ooh la la with a virtual stranger, which he soon wishes that he hadn’t...
It’s gained such status that even classic sitcom Only Fools and Horses parodied it in a Christmas special called Fatal Extraction.
In the Only Fools episode, Raquel leaves Del and with his pride hurt more than a wounded animal, he asks a dentist out on a date.  She accepts but then bottles it and that’s how it starts.
It recreates Attraction’s most infamous scene with Albert boiling his pants, instead of a cute bunny.
So because of this, every psycho bitch from hell is candidly named a bunny boiler.
This was of course the first film to really portray a female as a dangerous psycho, well not really as while it’s a good film – the idea is ripped from a classic 70’s movie.
The film in question was Play Misty for Me in 1971; this was also Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut, who would go on to direct efforts like Million Dollar Baby and Changeling (amongst many others).  He would also question people’s luck with a ’44 Magnum and challenge the finest gun-slingers in pasta easterns.
Anyway, the plot is that Clint a radio DJ and he has a very brief fling with a female (Jessica Walter), blissfully unaware that she’s a psychotic obsessive who rings him every night to play Misty for her.  From then on, he’s stalked and becomes smothered by her.  He likes it at first but then when he tells her where to go, she displays increasingly irrational personality issues.
During all this shit, in an attempt to gain sympathy, she attempts suicide by hacking her wrists.  She’s of course unsuccessful but does enough to keep him with her for another night.
In Fatal Attraction, Douglas has the affair, Close also attempts the exact same suicide attempt and when he attempts to cancel the sex contract - that pisses her off.
There are some subtle differences between Misty and Attraction, as Walter is more dangerous as she clearly has a personality disorder and Close is basically a woman scorned.
In both films, the situation comes to a dramatic head and both have the same, but ‘different’ results.
Nevertheless, Attraction largely remains a huge rip-off as the gravy tastes the same, only a bit waterier.
Here’s where we really get stuck in girls & boys, so have a fix of coffee and tv and don’t just run, run run run onto para two.
The answer and many more will be revealed so universally speaking, I’m making it as easy as counting 1234.... relax, and why don’t you just sit down and linger around here for a bit as meanwhile back at the ranch, I have to check on my foals who can be wild horses, but while i’m gone, just don’t cheat on me.
To tell you the truth, I’m lost myself but take aim and try not to misfire.  I hope that people move on until the end.  I think that sometimes I’m talking garbage.  For now, you’re tender and you’re tired and I’m late for a beautiful occupation.
So dear friends, the end is near, I like watching television when I’m tired, I become unwashed and somewhat slightly dazed.  It’s time to call it a day because yes, it concludes.
Just for fun, including this sentence and the above four paras, how many bands, films, albums and songs in total are hidden?
Solution – work it out.
A hint – read rather carefully.  Don’t forget that there might be duplicates, now that’s really a massive hint.
Okay, anybody who wants to know will find out when I’m done, but give it a go as you might get it right w/o cheating.  Use the internet if you want, but if you think using this tool will make it easy, well maybe it will, maybe it won’t.
Take as long you want with this but whenever you’re ready - there’s so much more.
Water – an essential source of the Earth and for all forms of life.  It covers over 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface and the chemical formula of it is H2o.  It’s not a great surprise that music mentions it.
We start with Down by the River (Neil Young, Pulp and Feeder).  The Drums decided to go Down by the Water, Doves were Caught by the River and Cast found themselves in Bad Waters.  Iron & Wine had a Tree by the River, U2 had a Walk to the Water, Aerosmith could Walk on Water, and The Temper Trap went Down River.
Portishead treaded in Deep Water,  The Dirty Three waded through Deep Waters, I am Kloot was in The Same Deep Water as Me and Feist also had a liking for The Water.

The nearest star to the Earth is the sun and is the source of most of energy to our planet.  W/o contacting Patrick Moore, although much more complicated but the common type in the night sky and at their most basic they’re just stationary sparkly white things.
Again, such importance must be written about in music.
We begin with The Wannadies, who claimed they Might Be Stars but the Turin Brakes were sure they’re Full of Stars.  Ash observed There’s a Star, The Cranberries, The Xx and Switchfoot saw Stars and James said She’s a Star.  The Stone Roses said Your Star will Shine, The Pierces boasted We Are Stars, David Bowie sang of The Prettiest Star and he also said there’s a Starman waiting in the sky.
Thirteen Senses offered company to The Loneliest Star.

Ian Brown said to John Squire, hands off – that’s My Star, but The All-American Rejects and Evanescence argued as it's Your Star and Stereophonics couldn't miss a Bright Red Star.

My Dark Star and Dark Star are tracks from Suede and I am Kloot respectively.
To wrap up, The National with John’s Star, The Killers - Andy, You're a Star and Twinkle Star Sprites was a Neo Geo game.  Never mind, according to Low the Stars Gone Out ages ago.
If Low they are ever right – we’re fucked.
Thr3e and Three are different films, the third games of the F.E.A.R and Driver franchise also used this numbering to form part of their title, F.3.A.R and Driv3r respectively.

To stupidly follow, Four and Five are films.
We miss out six and eight but have Seven and Nine.  9 is also a film.

Six is a Mansun song and album.  Grimes do have a song called Eight.

Fifteen is a song by Ringo Deathstarr and Seventeen are songs by The Sex Pistols and Jet.

Shut Your Eyes and Open Your Eyes are songs by Snow Patrol and Close Your Eyes is a Future of Forestry tune.  Eyes Wide is by The Levellers.

Mediocre serial killer movie Untraceable is basically very similar to Fear dot com which also featured a killer and a website.  You could also say it's like The Ring w/o a video.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is a classic Clint Eastwood western, The Good, The Bad, The Weird is a Korean action film and The Good, The Bad & the Queen is a band with Blur frontman Damon Albarn (together with a song).
Noah and the Whale predicted something would happen in Five Years Time whereas Bowie only had Five Years.  Chapterhouse took Sixteen Years to grow up and The National are 29 Years young.  Placebo spoke of Twenty Years and Saint Etienne have Twenty Five Years.
Flo Rida and Light Pollution had a Good Feeling, Puressence felt This Feeling, Talking Heads have a New Feeling and Kate Bush enjoyed a Beautiful Feeling.

An island is a land mass surrounded by water, you know what’s coming....
The Phantom Band in 2009 had an Island, Pendulum decided to add to it in their album Immersion with The Island Pt I (Dawn) and Pt II (Dusk) in 2010.  Finally, The Decemberists also had The Island, also in three parts - 1. Come and See 2. The Landlord’s Daughter and 3. You’ll Not Feel the Drowning.
Keeping the same principle, Ian Brown had the same idea with What happened to ya Part 1 and 2 in Unfinished Monkey Business in 1998.  The Besnard Lakes told Like the Ocean, Like the Innocents Pts 1 & 2, Muse split Exogenesis: Symphony in three parts, namely Part 1 (overture), Part 2 (cross-pollination) and Part 3 (redemption).

Southern Comfort is an alcoholic drink and also a decent film.  Southern Air is a Yellowcard song.
As part of Muse’s The Resistance album, it featured United States of Eurasia (Collateral Damage).
United States was on purpose, meant to sound like Queen and (Collateral Damage) is based on Nocturne in e-flat Major, op 9, #2 by legendary Polish composer Frederic Chopin.  They added their own sound FX with children chortles and jets.

Anyway, there's a band called The War on Drugs and Weezer conclude We Are All on Drugs.

So having recovered from that...

I thought about Quadrophenia the other day so I cut my hair, in the same breath I also heard a voice saying Cut your Hair when I was on Pavement.  Once there, I came across Broken Social Scene where Ibi Dreams of a Pavement.

White Rabbit, Return of the White Rabbit and Red Rabbits are songs by Jefferson Airplane, Ash and The Shins.

Good Charlotte asked me to Meet My Maker and The Kooks chatted about Mr Maker.  Mr Maker is also an irritating Cbeebies regular.

Annie Let's Not Wait, Annie Wants a Baby and Annie Get Your Gun are tracks by Guillemots, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Squeeze respectively.

The Dears pleaded that no matter how bad things get, you just Don’t Lose the Faith and Bon Jovi demanded we Keep The Faith.

Blue are songs from Elastica, The Verve and First Aid Kit and The Beautiful South found that Blue is the Colour for an album.

More rip off stuff now with Oasis’ All Around the World

Eventually turns into a lazy Hey Jude effort

Like Hey Jude, it is also becomes quite boring.

Then There Were Giants is a film, They Might Be Giants is a band, We Looked Like Giants is a song by Death Cab for Cutie and Standing on the Shoulder of Giants is an Oasis album

I was in jail and feeling down on my luck so I pleaded with The Sand Band and The Kinks to Set Me Free.  They failed but after launching an appeal, I told Cast, Joss Stone and Foo Fighters to Free Me and clearly upbeat of this news, I told a fellow prisoner not to worry as The Black Keys would Set You Free.

Whilst eating the slop in the canteen, we both agreed Let's Get Free, thanks to Sheryl Crow.

When me and my fellow con departed from the grey bar hotel, we both hollered I'm Free as we were both thinking of The Who.  As it hadn't quite sunk in Plan B compelled us both to say Free.

Talking Heads, Bullet for my Valentine and Turin Brakes travelled down the Road to Nowhere and Goldfrapp ventured down the Road to Somewhere.

The Smiths spoke of this Charming Man and Blur sang of a Charmless Man.

The Twilight Singers have a song called I Wish I Was and Bulletproof... I Wish I Was is a track by Radiohead.

The Wrestler sees Mickey Rourke in an acting tour de force as Randy “The Ram” Robinson, Wrestle is a Frightened Rabbit song and Wrestlers is a song by Hot Chip.

Capcom and fighting game junkies know that Abel is a Street Fighter IV char, it's also a song by The National.

Kasabian tried to Shoot the Runner and Kings of Leon sent The Runner.

You can't own whatever kind of title so the following is a list of at least two films that share the same name but are totally different films.

Let’s be clear, the titles are exact so I haven’t been lazy and added films that really differed from the actual name of the earlier or later films(s), so none exist w/o or with ‘The’, ‘A’, a space between words, etc etc.  Otherwise, they wouldn’t count.

This is of course remains true for all such lists.

Just to prove it – years are detailed.

Take a film that you have seen and/or heard about and then it dawns on you – wait a minute; isn’t that also a song?  Well yes that’s perfectly true.  This is coincidence as most of the films have about as much in common with the songs as chocolate does with cheese.

Bands sometimes write a soundtrack specifically for a film as famously, Queen made Highlander what it is with hits such as Who Wants to Live Forever and Princes of the Universe.

Tommy and Quadrophenia are based on rock operas by The Who.

Anyway, feast your eyes on what should whet your appetite before the last

To really irritate, Mathilda and Matilda are tracks by Little Comets and alt-J respectively.

I take the proudest bow in creating the Mild, Medium-Hot and Scorching Lists.

Most and more will continue to expand (as and when) as such lists have grown with such enormity, keep an eye on other 'varieties' for more, more and more of this and everything else.

I just know stuff may be hijacked (mainly by those who are really interested in this kind of thing) and/or anything else I've mentioned.

That is not blowing hard on my trumpet but it could happen....

Please be mindful that those who choose to cheat and steal never prosper.

Hope you enjoyed everything contained and you're just a click from much, much more.

So as promised, if you remember right near the start (it feels like an age ago now) - I set everybody a brainteaser.*

*This post has undergone major expansion so it may no longer be accurate but (touching wood) I'm hopeful that it still is.

Some (but not all) answers were buried but whatever, the answer is 53.

Here’s the break down:

1st para – Stuck (three different films), coffee and tv (Blur song), Run (two different songs by Snow Patrol and Air), and Run Run Run (Velvet Underground song).
(Seven marks).

2nd para – The Answer (band), universally speaking (Chili Peppers song), 1234 (Feist song), relax (Frankie Goes to Hollywood song), just (Radiohead song), sit down (James song), linger (Cranberries song), here (Pavement and Take That songs), meanwhile back at the ranch (The Courteeners and Badfinger songs), foals (band), wild horses (Rolling Stones song) and cheat on me (Cribs and Metallica songs).
(Fifteen marks).

3rd para – lost myself (Longpigs song), take aim (Kasabian song), misfire (Queen song), people move on (Bernard Butler and album), the end (The Doors, Kings of Leon, Bullet for my Valentine and Beatles songs), sometimes (The Stranglers, James, Britney Spears, Ash, Pearl Jam and No Doubt songs), garbage (band), you’re tender and you’re tired (Manic Street Preachers song), beautiful occupation (Travis song).
(Eighteen marks).

4th para – dear friends (Queen and Elbow song), end is near (Embrace and The Fiery Furnaces songs), television (band), i’m tired (Bernard Butler song), unwashed and somewhat slightly dazed (David Bowie song), call it a day (Raconteurs song), and yes (Coldplay and Manic Street Preachers songs).
(Ten marks).

Sentence – just (Radiohead song again), four (film) and hidden (film).
(Three marks).

The above teaser was of course based on what I know so it should be right (providing I haven’t missed anything).

Thanks very much (as always) for reading.
