Doctor Strange - The scoop and digest

Following 1978 TV movie was direct-to-video 2007 animated film The Sorcerer Supreme.

Scott Derrickson throwing sinister hat into superhero ring should blow us away.

Benedict Cumberbatch - Dr. Stephen Strange/Dormammu
Chiwetel Ejiofor - Mordo
Mads Mikkelsen - Kaecilius
Tilda Swinton - Ancient One
Rachel McAdams - Christine Palmer
Benedict Wong - Wong
Benjamin Bratt - Jonathan Pangborn

Debut of new fanfare logo aside, actual film opens up in Kathmandu, Nepal, with evil sorcerer Kaecilius and cronies decapitating Kamar-Taj's librarian and stealing pages from Ancient One's book.

Sorceress Supreme fails and geezer escapes.

A car accident renders mega arrogant and renowned neurosurgeon Stephen Strange's hands useless.

After experimental surgery proves fruitless, former paraplegic Jonathon Pangborn points ass in the direction of secret compound Kamar-Taj.

He's eventually taken in by the Ancient One and under Mordu's magical wing, learns mystical powers.

Strange exploits new found abilities by 'borrowing' literature from Wong's library and learns Earth is protected by three Sanctums, located in New York, London and Hong Kong.

Trophy hunting friend the Predator is able to bend light, and Strange finds the Eye of Agamotto (one of the Infinity Gems), manipulates time.

Meanwhile, Kaecilius uses stolen pages to summon monstrous creature Dormammu of the Dark Dimension, where time ceases to be - hence granting immortality.

Kaecilius mortally wounds Ancient One and despite Strange's best astral plane efforts, cannot prevent the inevitable.

With final Sanctum destroyed in Hong Kong, the Dark Dimension is overwhelming Earth.

Pissed at loop set to infinite repeat, Dormammu escapes by agreeing to leave Earth.

Critters down below are also taken with charred bodies purposely resembling the 'Mindless Ones'.

He'll be back...

Appalled at defilement of nature, Mordo leaves.

Eye is returned to Kamar-Taj and Strange continues his research.

Mid-credits has Strange agreeing to help Thor find Odin (setting up third film Ragnarok), and post-credits sees Mordo nicking Pangborn's 'walking' energy, stating Earth has too many sorcerers.

'MARVEL'ous.

DC - please take note.

Folding space and time, mind-bending special effects simply astound.

This reminded me of so much.

Edge of Tomorrow, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (video game), Inception, Portal and very briefly towards the end, even Akira.

Performances hit the high notes and like featured Pink Floyd track, entertainment is set to Interstellar Overdrive.

Introducing multiverse ensures possibilities for Strange to enter other franchises are literally endless.

Before already confirmed sequel, one would guess first port of call will be Infinity Wars.

Stan Lee's bus passenger is seen reading Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception.

With or without mescaline, book title is taken from a phrase in William Blake's 1793 poem The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.

Okay, you may know that, but geekflash.

In Grasshopper's comedy hack and slash Lollipop Chainsaw, psychedelic zombie boss Mariska makes direct reference.

Fantastic stuff.
