Mission: Impossible - Fallout - The scoop and digest

Christopher McQuarrie returning as writer/director is significant, as it makes him the first to run more than one Impossible show.

Tom Cruise - Ethan Hunt
Henry Cavill - August Walker
Ving Rhames - Luther
Simon Pegg - Benji
Rebecca Ferguson - Ilsa Faust
Sean Harris - Solomon Lane
Angela Bassett - Erica Sloane
Vanessa Kirby - White Widow
Alec Baldwin - Alan Hunley

Two years after the events of Rogue Nation, Ethan is given 72 hours to prevent terrorist group The Apostles (remainder of Solomon Lane's Syndicate), from acquiring three plutonium cores needed to power portable nuclear weapons.

Plan has been masterminded by a geezer known only as John Lark.

After black market plutonium deal goes tits up, Ethan's team tricks nuke expert Doctor Debruuck into thinking terror attacks have been committed around the world.  During which, intel on Apostles' next move is got.

CIA big cheese Erica Sloane sends Special Activities operative Walker to shadow Hunt.

In Paris, Hunt makes a deal to swap plutonium with arms dealer and money launderer White Widow, in exchange for Lane's extraction from an armoured convoy.

MI6 want Lane dead, and after a motorcycle chase, target is successfully captured.

Back in London, Hunley confronts Hunt about being Lark, and is incapacitated for his troubles.

I always thought there was something fishy about Walker, and sure enough, our man accidentally reveals himself to be Lark.

What is it they say about men with moustaches?

Ha ha ha!

Plan was so simple.  Walker helps Lane frame Hunt and tache face gets the plutonium.

But no, Lane had to fuck it all up.

Walker kills Hunley and flees with Lane to Kashmir.

Lane's plan to contaminate a third of the world's water supply is put into action and 15 minute countdown begins.

Trouble is, bombs cannot be deactivated without the detonator.

Better find that Walker dude then.

Following helicopter chase, Hunt and Walker square off on cliff edge, with winch eventually sealing baddie's fate.

Hunt manages to diffuse situation and in the aftermath, Lane is handed back to MI6 and the team celebrate victory with Hunt recuperating in hospital.

Impossibly good

Boasting great performances, excellent pacing, a twisty turny plot and fabulous action, high-octane thrill fest is definitely the best Mission yet.

Jeremy Renner opted out of high-profile cameo due to Marvel commitments.

Whether HALO diving, rooftop jumping, hanging on to helicopter ladder or climbing cliff face, the evergreen Cruise continues to drop jaws with another set of breathtaking stunts.

I'm sure the usual suspects will return for another assignment, but given franchise's fickle history, McQuarrie retaining dual position is fifty-fifty.
