Of course, that turned out to be bullshit.
However, Sutherland did return in remake/re-imagining as different character Dr. Barry Wolfson.
Multiple prequels and sequels
Alien: Covenant - sequel to Prometheus which prequels Alien.
Will series continue? Who knows?

Michael Mann first adapted Red Dragon as Manhunter in 1986.
Annabelle is a prequel/spin-off to The Conjuring and Annabelle: Creation prequels former.
Like Captain America: The First Avenger, The Nun (2018) is chronologically the first in universe.
