M3GAN - The scoop and digest

Gerard Johnstone's horror satire is written by Akela Cooper, who also co-wrote story with James Wan.

Allison Williams - Gemma
Violet McGraw - Cady
Amie Donald and Jenna Davis - M3GAN
Brian Jordan Alvarez - Cole
Ronny Chieng - David

Summary

After Cady survives a car accident which killed her parents, roboticist Gemma secures custody of eight-year-old niece.

In retaliation to the launch of Furzeez (a discounted rip-off of Funki's Purrpetual Petz), Gemma creates Model 3 Generative Android (M3GAN for short), a fully autonomous humanoid robot; which revels in developing self-improvement.

Unfortunately, her magnum opus malfunctions and combusts, angering CEO David.

To solve her strained relationship with Cady, Gemma persists with M3GAN and hits the jackpot, much to the delight of both David and Cady.

However, new family member becomes obsessed with Cady, targeting anything or anybody deemed a threat.

Real love

While undeniably similar to Child's Play (2019) and Orphan, I really enjoyed myself.

Plot offers no surprises, but skilful direction, a darkly humorous script and brilliant performances more than compensates.

What could have ruined things is M herself, but I'm happy to say she's a campy revelation.

Dance baby dance.

Original cut was re-shot to secure a lower rating.  Consequently, not much gore is shown.

But that doesn't mean to say there aren't any nasty kills to enjoy.

For instance, Brandon the bully gets his ear ripped off and after tumbling down a hill onto a road, he's run over.

Exciting climax steals more than its fair share.

Cady interrupts M and G trying to kill each other and she sets G's unfinished robot Bruce on M, which rips her in two (Aliens).

Once torso reanimates and goes for Cady, she becomes The Terminator.

Antagonist is apparently destroyed when G tears her face off and stabs CPU with a screwdriver.

But before credits roll, we see M upgrade into G's smartphone.

Oh, almost forgot.

One night, M briefly sings David Guetta's Titanium to Cady.

Nothing immediately strange, but during G's presentation of M, we're told beneath the silicone, frame is made from...

Who knows if intentional, but HA HA HA.
