Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - The scoop and digest

Writer-director James Gunn returns for one last feature-length ride.

To jog memories, Holiday Special was a 40 minute short.

Chris Pratt - Peter Quill/Star-Lord
Zoe Saldaña - Gamora
Dave Bautista - Drax
Karen Gillan - Nebula
Pom Klementieff - Mantis
Vin Diesel - Groot
Bradley Cooper - Rocket
Sean Gunn - Kraglin
Chukwudi Iwuji - High Evolutionary
Will Poulter - Adam Warlock

Summary

Baby Rocket (89P13) is the most intelligent piece in the High Evolutionary's jigsaw to create a Counter-Earth populated by anthropomorphic animals.

Yes, villain was inspired by Doctor Moreau.

After learning he and others won't be part of the equation, Rocket escapes, with fellow critters killed in the process.

Years later, Adam Warlock attacks the Guardians' rebuilt headquarters Knowhere, resulting in Rocket being mortally wounded.

A killswitch embedded inside badger's body prevents the Guardians from treating his injury, leading gang to acquire override code on Orgoscope.

Amidst toing and froing, deranged villain is hellbent on retrieving test subject.

Mid-credits

Led by new Guardians captain Rocket, gang discuss musical taste and prepare to battle an army of bugs.

Post-credits

Jason Quill's newspaper concerns Kevin Bacon and alien abduction.

Heart and darkness

Disjointed running time of 2h 30 is composed of two narratives.  The brutality of animal experimentation and a generic space and rescue adventure, similar to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Banter and chemistry between all and sundry remains strong, but raised voices got annoying.

Saldaña reprises Endgame variant role and being a bitch doesn't put Peter off Ravages leader.

Relationship develops nicely.

Peter's frustration at Nebula struggling to open a car door results in the first uncensored Marvel f-bomb.

Action is fairly standard, but corridor sequence stands out.

Having said that, I did detect Darth Vader and Rogue One.

Screenplay doesn't give Warlock much to do and Iwuji lacks presence and menace.

Antagonist is ultimately overwhelmed and left to perish aboard spaceship.

While not entirely necessary, I was surprised nobody bit the big one.  Rocket's near death experience doesn't count of course.

Why did Peter forget jet boots and helmet?

Head gear was destroyed by Ego in Vol. 2, but repaired for Infinity War and Endgame.

But the biggest problem is that Peter should've died in space before Adam rescued him.

Lest we forget, geezer lost celestial powers when Ego's light was extinguished.

"The Legendary Star-Lord will return" is displayed after final extra scene.

If tease is literal, this places an obligation to adapt short-lived comic series before Avengers: Secret Wars (2026).
