Talk to Me - The scoop and digest

Another film and TV series (both unrelated) of same title exist.

Interestingly, each concern radio personalities.

Anyway.

Known for YouTube channel RackaRacka, twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou make their directorial debut.

Sophie Wilde - Mia
Alexandra Jensen - Jade
Joe Bird - Riley
Otis Dhanji - Daniel
Zoe Terakes - Hayley
Chris Alosio - Joss
Alexandria Steffensen - Rhea

Summary

Cole finds his disturbed brother Duckett hiding in a room.  As he's led away, Duckett stabs Cole, then commits suicide.

One night, friends Mia, Jade and Riley sneak out to a party hosted by Joss and Hayley.

A mysterious disembodied ceramic hand used to conjure spirits is brought into the room.

It's later revealed that hand belonged to a medium, rumoured to be a Satanist.

Rules boys and girls:

Light the candle to 'open the door'.
Say 'Talk to me' to meet and greet, followed by 'I let you in' for full possession.
Blow out the candle after 90 seconds to 'close the door'.

Mia gives shit a go, and left buzzing by experience.

Activity becomes an addiction for all concerned, but after Riley makes contact with dead mother Rhea, they exceed time limit and something nasty joins the party.

Letting the wrong ones in

Despite shades of The Monkey's Paw (retold as Pet Semetary by Stephen King), this was a fresh and solid take on a familiar premise.

Practical effects are nice and gooey and impressive sound design ensures atmosphere is creepy.

Unlike so many teenage horrors, most characters are actually likable, with Sophie Wilde giving a great performance.

Spirits could've been more unpleasant though.

Riley violently self-harming takes heavy cues from Evil Dead and I presume main character's name is no coincidence.

Also, him licking blood from floor recalls an icky scene in Cronos.

A screenlife prequel has already been shot but release date is currently unknown.
