Sting - The scoop and digest

This is writer-director Kiah Roache-Turner's first film set in America, as opposed to his native Australia.

Ryan Corr - Ethan
Alyia Browne - Charlotte
Penelope Mitchell - Heather
Robyn Nevin - Gunter
Noni Hazlehurst - Helga
Silvia Colloca - Maria
Danny Kim - Eric
Jermaine Fowler - Frank

Summary

During a massive ice storm, Helga contacts an exterminator called Frank to investigate the noises inside her walls.

Something drags him away and he's presumably killed off-screen.

4 days earlier.

After a meteorite crash-lands inside an apartment block, fragment spawns a mysterious spider.

When Charlotte (as in Web) stumbles across 'Sting', rebellious 12-year-old begins feeding it bugs and pet becomes huge.

Armed with intelligence and an insatiable appetite, arachnid unleashes hell.

Eat and kill

Apart from the obvious, the main difference between this and Infested is tone.

Although serious, situation feels a bit goofy, when everybody should be shitting themselves.

Gore can be nice and undoubtedly the standout moment is Sting forcing its way inside Maria's mush.

Mixing CG and old-school puppetry, creature is an impressive creation and never looks fake.

Comedy character Frank at one point remarks:

"It's bleeding, that means we can kill it."

Yeah, an obvious nod to Predator.

Also, Sting mimics sounds to lure prey.

As spiders don't have vocal cords, it's a good job that beastie is from another world.

Fuck all that though, as ugly motherfucker is essentially an eight-legged xenomorph and sounds like a Dilophosaurus.

Even apartment block setting is very Alien/Aliens.

Prior to being crushed by a trash compressor, it's revealed that Sting laid several eggs.

But unlike spider, I don't think a sequel will be born.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga - The scoop and digest

George Miller directs and co-writes the second prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road with Nico Lathouris.

Don't forget, a 4-issue comic series of same name was released at the time, and also unrelated to forgotten 2015 video game just called Mad Max.

1990 NES game bearing identical name is based on Mad Max 2, but is actually a remake of Road Raider (1988).

Right, time to start those engines.

Anna Taylor-Joy - Adult Furiosa
Chris Hemsworth - Dementus
Tom Burke - Praetorian Jack
Alyla Browne - Child/Teenage Furiosa
Lachy Hulme - Immortan Joe
Charlee Fraser - Mary Jo Bassa

Summary

Film spans five parts, chapters or whatever.

1. The Pole of Inaccessibility
2. Lessons from the Wasteland
3. The Stowaway
4. Homeward
5. Beyond Vengeance

Following a global catastrophe, Australia has become a radioactive wasteland and the Green Place of Many Mothers is one of the few areas to still boast multiple resources.

A young Furiosa is captured by a masked biker gang and delivered to warlord Dementus.

During a power struggle between Dementus and Immortan Joe in Gastown (the second fortress of the wasteland), 15 years later, "Little D" embarks on a mission to avenge her mother's death at the hands of adoptive father.

Justice and retribution

While never as impressive as original, origin story is still good.

Thor has an absolute blast portraying goofy villain and chews up every scene.

He throws down the gauntlet to his gang by saying:

"Who's got the goods, the bollocks, the testes, to ride with Dementus?"

Action takes over an hour to get going, but unbroken 15 minute chase sequence is pretty spectacular, even if CG does the heavy lifting.

Will a sequel to Fury Road be greenlit?

Hopefully.

'Probably' everything that Resident Evil 3 ripped off

While undoubtedly a steaming pile of fucking shit, re-imagining has given me an obscene amount of material to work with over the past four years.

The time has finally come to milk this cow dry.

Miscellany

Hunter 𝜸 vs T-rex - Jurassic Park

Hunter 𝛃 vs Predator

Nemesis

We all 'should' know that the design of 1999 original raped Hellraiser's Chattering Cenobite.

21 years later.

Jesus Christ. Could they have made me look any goofier?
Apparently not mate.

Mutation vs Uber Licker - Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

As a side note.

Resident Evil (2002 film)
The Red Queen explains that after feeding on fresh DNA, one of the Hive's early experiments will mutate, becoming a stronger, faster hunter.
Aliens

Final form vs Queen

"Take the fucking hint" vs "Eat this!"

Rewinding slightly.

Resident Evil: Vendetta

Rail gun now operational.

For shiggles, Jill used a similar weapon during the climax of Death Island (2023).

Presenting the main event.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)

The only redeeming feature in the first Alice sequel was Sienna Guillory as Jill.

Who is SOOO fit btw.

Thanks babe.
If you're lucky, I'll make you a sandwich later...
(Blushes).

Anyway, for reasons beyond my comprehension, Capcom, in their infinite wisdom; decided to steal a bevvy of scenes.

WHY?

Events don't play out in the order shown, but I'm pretending they do.

FMV

Fun fact.

The meat of game's video, audio and sound effects are taken from the Rodney King riots of 1992.

And.
Resident Evil - 2002 Gamecube remake
A news broadcast very briefly appears during CG intro.
Message from a colleague vs newspaper clipping

So in both universes, Jill was suspended.

Coincidence? I don't think so.

Also, file and article are found/seen inside Jill's apartment.

Nemesis

Antagonist initially lies dormant on an operating table.

When 'activated', bastard opens his eye.

HA HA HA!

Jill loads her Beretta.

Also.

Same principle occurs in 1999 original, albeit static.
Weapon case

Busting through wall

Wrapping things up.

Rocket launcher takes aim.

Subsequently, Jill and Alice survive explosion.

Game over.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 - The scoop and digest

From a screenplay by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, Renny Harlin begins a new trilogy.

Madelaine Petsch - Maya
Froy Gutierrez - Ryan
Matúš Lajčák - Scarecrow
Olivia Kreutzova - Dollface
Letizia Fabbri - Pin-Up Girl

Summary

Happy couple Ryan and Maya are on a road trip in Oregon celebrating their five year anniversary.

After their car mysteriously breaks down while at a diner in Venus, they're forced to stay at an Airbnb.

One night, a girl knocks on the door asking for Tamara, who they've obviously never heard of.

What happens next?

Hmmm.

Mid-credits

Maya awakes in a hospital with a man lying next to her.

Because you're here

First off, this isn't a prequel.

So why the FUCK are trio of psychopaths wearing the same masks?

Apart from setting and a few innovations, this goes over very familiar ground and was neither scary or disturbing.

Not even Maya getting her hand stuck on a nail was cringing, and really reminded me of Eden Lake.

Hopefully things will pick up in the next (expected later this year), but I was grossly underwhelmed.

Oh, for reasons unknown, Maya and a stranger use a conveniently placed piano to belt out Moonlight Sonata.

If this is a reference to Resident Evil, then I'm tastier than a Jill sandwich.

Infested (2023) - The scoop and digest

Sébastien Vanicek co-writes his directorial debut with Florent Bernard.

Théo Christine - Kaleb
Sofia Lesaffre - Lila
Jérôme Niel - Mathys
Lisa Nyarko - Manon

Summary

A bunch of spiders are captured from a hole in a desert.

Much to the annoyance of his sister Manon, wannabe hustler Kaleb adds a spider to his makeshift menagerie.

When latest addition escapes and lays eggs, all hell breaks loose, and a desperate battle for survival begins.

Arachnids of unusual size

Patient build up explodes into a cacophony of tension and panic, where fear literally spills from every nook and cranny.

Shit is deadly serious, and performances feel very real indeed.

Creature effects are really impressive and CG doesn't look cheap at all.

Spidergeddon delivers brutal bursts of carnage and 'eww' moments are not in short supply.

Amidst all the positives, it's a shame that spectacle is light on gore and climax disappoints.

However, bathing claustrophobic apartment block setting in blood may have spoiled a little gem.

The Stunning World of SNK's Neo Geo

Metal Slug (1996)

Contrary to popular belief, original was developed by Nazca Corporation, not SNK.

Anyway.

Undercover Cops (1992)

I smell something fishy.
