Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - The scoop and digest

Wes Ball's standalone sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes is written by Josh Friedman.

Owen Teague - Noa
Kevin Durand - Proximus Caesar
Peter Macon - Raka
Neil Sandilands - Koro
Freya Allan - Mae/Nova
William H. Macy - Trevathan
Dichen Lachman - Korina

Summary

Many generations after Caesar's death (300 years in supplementary materials and interviews), apes have established numerous clans and humans have become feral.

Noa is preparing for an upcoming bonding ceremony with fellow chimpanzee friends Anaya and Soona.

One night, a group of ape raiders follow Noa's horse back to his village.  When Noa returns, raider leader Sylva kills his father Koro, before knocking him sparko.

When Noa awakens, he buries Koro and vows to bring those responsible down.

He soon meets orangutan Raka and human scavenger Nova, who later reveals her real name is Mae.

Noa and Mae are eventually brought before tyrannical ape king Proximus Caesar, who is forcing members of captured clans to open settlement's vault to access human technology.

The first hour was really boring, but shit picks up during the second part, with tensions between both factions exploding into a pretty exciting climax.

VFX ensures post-apocalyptic landscape looks phenomenal and motion capture is among the best you'll see.

Considering this is the beginning of another trilogy, I'm not buying for a solitary second that Proximus actually died.

For the record, his 'death' of eagles forcing him off a cliff smacks of Julius Caesar's assassination.

While undeniably impressive, this is extremely derivative to War, as Proximus not only rules a similar setting, villainous character is basically Woody Harrelson's Colonel.

Having said that, you could also argue that the conclusion of Caesar's story rehashes Battle (1973).
