Known for brilliant debut The Loved Ones and The Devil's Candy, Sean Byrne's third is written by Nick Lepard.
Title doesn't make a great deal of sense, but it's also a song by Arctic Monkeys.
Hassie Harrison - Zephyr
Jai Courtney - Bruce Tucker
Josh Heuston - Moses
Ella Newton - Heather
Liam Greinke - Greg
Rob Carlton - Dave
Summary
In Australia's Gold Coast, shark-obsessed serial killer Bruce Tucker runs a cage diving business, which is actually a front for him to murder men and abduct women at sea.
Something that friends Greg and Heather soon find out.
After free-spirited Zephyr meets and beds Moses, she decides to go for a late night surf.
Tucker surprises Zephyr from behind and knocks her out. She awakes on his boat in a storage room handcuffed to a bed with Heather in close attendance.
Heather is hoisted into the air by a crane and lowered into the ocean. During which, Tucker films her being eaten by sharks.
Zephyr must work out how to get the fuck out of there.
Hangman's shoals
Jai Courtney impresses as unhinged antagonist and while I expected kills to be nastier, gore compensates.
The 50th anniversary of Jaws is nearly upon us.
Cue the references.
Heather's leg (already bitten off) sinks to the bottom, just like Estuary Victim.
Tucker's first name is Bruce. Steven Spielberg named the shark that barely worked after his lawyer.
Finally, Tucker is eaten by a Great White, a la Quint.
While a fun time, issues include dumb decisions, unnecessary romantic sub plot and repetitive nature (particularly during the last 40 minutes).
Some describe this as 'Wolf Creek meets Open Water', but it's more like The Shallows.
But fuck all that, as I primarily watched Dead Calm.
Here's why.
Tucker vs Hughie (Billy Zane)
Zephyr vs Rae (Nicole Kidman)
If that wasn't enough, some eerie 'similarities'.
Zephyr fires a harpoon into Tucker's stomach. Rae does the same to Hughie, but hits his shoulder instead.
Zephyr misses with a flare. John kills Hughie with the same projectile, in the mouth no less.
