The Shrouds - The scoop and digest

Writer-director David Cronenberg's latest is a co-production between France and Canada.

Vincent Cassel - Karsh Relikh
Diane Kruger - Becca Relikh/Terry Gerlent/Hunny
Guy Pearce - Maury Entrekin
Sandrine Holt - Soo-Min Szabo
Elizabeth Saunders - Gray Foner
Steve Switzman - Dr. Jerry Eckler

Summary

Four years after his wife Becca died from cancer, business tycoon Karsh Relikh has created GraveTech, a tombstone installed with drone-like cameras which broadcasts a live interactive image, allowing bereaved relatives to observe their loved ones decomposing remains.

Of course, controversial technology comes with an app.

After we're introduced to his paranoid schizophrenic brother-in-law Maury, responsible for GraveTech's security system and virtual assistant resembling Becca called Hunny, a muddled tale of grief, sex and capitalism unfolds.

Digital necromancy

Inspired by the passing of his wife Carolyn in 2017, this is Cronenberg's most personal project since The Fly (1986).  Fact is reinforced by casting his acting dopplegänger Cassel in the title role.

As a fun coincidence, Cronenberg previously directed Dead Ringers (adapted as a TV series in 2023).

Anyway, convoluted mess might be his worst, with themes of sexual fascination for death and macabre voyeurism handled way more memorably in Crash (ntbcw with unrelated 2004 film of same name).

Body horror comes courtesy of Becca, sometimes missing arm and even breast.

If shit was gory and gross, then at least that would be some consoltation, but unfortunately...
