Len Wiseman's spin-off is written by Shay Hatten and primarily set during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, so obviously jack shit to do with boring prequel TV series The Continental.
For shiggles, two other unrelated films of same name were released in 2016 and 2023.
Interestingly, the latter also concerns a female assassin on a revenge mission.
Ana de Armas - Eve Macarro
Anjelica Huston - The Director
Gabriel Byrne - The Chancellor
Ian McShane - Winston
Lance Reddick - Charon
Sharon Duncan-Brewster - Nogi
Keanu Reeves - John Wick
Norman Reedus - Daniel Pine
Summary
A young Eve recalls how her father was killed for betraying sinister organization the Cult.
Winston takes wee lassie to the Ruska Roma where the Director takes her in.
During the next twelve years, Eve's mentor Nogi puts her through vigorous combat and gun training and she becomes a Kikimora assassin.
After completing another contract, Eve confronts the Director about the people who killed her father. To prevent breaking a long-standing truce between the Ruska Roma and the Cult, she's ordered not to pursue revenge mission.
But film sure would be boring if she did.
Hate is a very humbling thing
Although shit takes over 30 minutes to get going, action sequences move with sinuous grace and most fun when objects such as kitchen plates and ice skates are utilized as weapons.
But the standout moment is Ana torching henchmen with a flamethrower.
However, all this is down to series mainstay Chad Stahelski, who uncredited, directed extensive reshoots.
Wick appears for about 15 minutes and is sent to kill Eve by the Director to appease the Chancellor.
The much-advertised fight is not only a damp squib, but ultimately pointless because of timeline.
Also, Wick playing a much larger role in the final act takes the focus away from Eve, which considering it's not Reeves' film, was odd to the say the least.
Franchise is known for charismatic villains, like Zero (ironically in Chapter 3) and Caine in the superb Chapter 4, but Byrne is absolutely fucking AWFUL.
After trying to justify what he did in a miserable attempt to save his own ass, Eve isn't having none of it and shoots him dead.
Studio has hinted at developing a potential sequel and I'd happily dance with de Armas again.
