Tornado - The scoop and digest

Ten years after his critically acclaimed debut Slow West, writer-director John Maclean returns to embark on a murderous rampage.

Kōki - Tornado
Tim Roth - Sugarman
Jack Lowden - Little Sugar
Takehiro Hira - Fujin
Rory McCann - Kitten
Ian Hanmore - Thief

Summary

British Isles, 1790.

Titular character is seen fleeing Sugarman's ruthless gang of highwaymen, taking refuge inside a secluded mansion.

When they can't find her, the gang split up and continue search outside.

Around this time, Sugarman reveals he's been stabbed.

After her father Fujin is killed, Tornado decides to cut through her enemies with glee.

Remember her name

Action is generally sporadic until the final 15 minutes, but when shit kicks off, blood spurts and limbs are severed.

I enjoyed leading lady's performance, but Tim Roth is brilliant, knocking nasty shit out of the park.

Not that we knew at the time, but villain's injury was caused by Fujin's sword, sealing his fate from the start.

I'd suggest wound (as opposed to bullet) alludes to Mr. Orange.  Going further, narrative structure is similar to Reservoir Dogs.

As grief becomes rage, Tornado utters the following:

"For those who wish to survive in battle, there is only death."

This quote is attributed to samurai warlord Nagao Kagetora, later known as Uesugi Kenshin.

"Engage in combat fully determined to die and you will be alive, wish to survive in the battle and you will surely meet death."

Hmmm.
