Alex Garland acknowledges Resident Evil (1996) and George A. Romero's Dead trilogy were chief to screenplay, with the opening hospital sequence inspired by John Wyndham's 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids, and/or Steve Sekely's subsequent film adaptation.
Why not throw The Crazies (1973) into the mix too?
