Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City - The scoop and digest

Writer-director and fan Johannes Roberts reboots survival horror.

Kaya Scodelario - Claire Redfield
Hannah John-Kamen - Jill Valentine
Robbie Amell - Chris Redfield
Tom Hopper - Albert Wesker
Avan Jogia - Leon S. Kennedy
Donal Logue - Chief Brian Irons
Neal McDonough - William Birkin

Summary

Following their parents dying in a car accident, a young Chris and Claire live at the Orphanage.

Knowing she's next in line for William Birkin's experimental research, Claire escapes.

30th of September 1998.

Irons sends Alpha Team to investigate a death near the Spencer Mansion.

Wesker receives a message on PDA from an unknown party informing 'Raccoon City will be destroyed at 6am'.

As time literally passes by, 'action' hops between characters at RPD and the Spencer Mansion.

Mid-credits

Wesker awakes inside a body bag and struggles free, unable to see.  Ada Wong (Lily Gao) hands him a pair of sunglasses, which brings eyesight back.

Whole thing mirrors Gamecube remake loading up.

Cheap and very nasty

The haters have unfortunately been proved right.

Rubbish script, woeful pacing, bizarre casting, appalling CG and laughable performances meant this was FUCKING AWFUL.

With a paltry running time of about 1h 40, squeezing two narratives into one film was never going to work and neutralising Midwestern town has fucked up any possibility of solely adapting Resi 3.

Oh, the Mansion incident occurred on 24 July, so timeline (like countless other things) makes no sense.

Sets based on Resi (2002) and Resi 2 (2019) look impressive from the outside, but interior suggests shit was shot in a completely different place.

Characters behave nothing like video game counterparts and making Leon an idiot, (who can't even use a shotgun) really pissed me off.

Before destroying G-Birkin with rocket launcher, instead of "Game Over!", rookie exclaims "Hey you ugly fuck."

I missed Marvin, Kendo (and I suppose Rebecca), but more importantly - where's Barry?

(Sigh).

The prospect of Tyrant smashing through prison wall and crushing Ben's skull like a grape (especially with Leon in close attendance) was set up perfectly.

But a zombie cocks that up.

Amidst the excruciating pain, two really DUMB things happen.

Leon is listening to Jennifer Paige's Crush as zombified Trucker enters RPD.

And I thought trailer using 4 Non Blonde's What's Up? was peculiar.

After zombie bites Brad, geezer decides to fly chopper into the mansion.

Even if this is supposed to be a nod to Resi 2, WTF?

References

For shits and mixed herbs.

Jill sandwich

In Emmy's diner, Jill steals Wesker's snack and makes it hers.

ITCHY TASTY

Largely off-screen, Chris's infected neighbour writes bloody message on window.

Officially, it should be Itchy. Tasty.

Yawn and Mother Neptune

Jill asks Wesker what would be the worst way to die.  Swallowed whole by a snake or eaten alive by a Great white shark?

Both describe how Richard dies in the Gamecube remake.

Here, dude is overwhelmed by the undead.

Code: Veronica

Slide recreates opening cut scene of the Ashford twins.

Moonlight Sonata

Wesker briefly playing tune on piano opens hidden door.

Turning around zombie

After Chris and Richard interrupt zombie eating Enrico, head slowly turns.

Playing card keys

At the Orphanage, Lisa Trevor gives Claire four-piece set (Heart, Club, Spade and Diamond), with Club opening underground passage.

Ironically, key is exclusive to Leon's campaign in Resi 2 (2019).
