Heart Eyes - The scoop and digest

Josh Ruben's slasher romcom is written by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy.

Olivia Holt - Ally
Mason Gooding - Jay
Gigi Zumbado - Monica
Devon Zawa - Det. Hobbs
Jordana Brewster - Det. Shaw

Summary

For the past few years, the Heart Eyes Killer has been murdering couples on Valentine's Day across America.

HEK has now settled in Seattle and soon makes work colleagues Ally and Jay (who aren't together), his/her primary targets.

Mid-credits

One year later, Monica prank calls best friend Ally as HEK and shortly after hanging up, she gets another call, but film cuts out before identity is revealed.

Love isn't blind

After an excellent opening sequence, gore takes a back seat until Jay is taken away for questioning at a police station.

Genre bender works though, mainly because of the chemistry between Holt and Gooding.

18 cert is entirely justified, as whichever HEK bathes the canvas red without hesitation.

Yeah, there's three killers.  Eli (copycat), David (IT guy) and his wife Det. Shaw.  They met online and both enjoy killing for fun.

Forgive me while I Scream at principle.

HEK even behaves like Ghostface and knife is basically the equivalent of Jason's machete.

He or she mixes it up with bolt gun, and randomly a tire iron (lug wrench in the UK).

Climax takes place inside a chapel, where Shaw is ironically decapitated by the sword of St. Valentine and David is stabbed, burned by candle wax and shot.

Although entertaining, shit kinda loses its way after Ally and Jay team up to kill Eli (anonymous at the time) at a drive-in movie theatre.

But here's what's really STUPID.

As Seattle is famously 'tropical' in February, you'd think everybody would be breathing cold air, right?

Wrong.

Also, no snow in sight.
