After a turgid first half, things kinda pick up, building towards an acceptable, albeit unoriginal climax.
Valak doesn't really feature until the end and intermittently uses Maurice to carry out mischief.
Librarian in the Catholic Archives reveals Valak was once an angel, rejected by God and stripped of power.
Fictional monk Jean-Paul Redar buried the eyes of Saint Lucia inside his monastery (now boarding school), and Valak requires ancient relic to become omnipotent.
