The Strangers: Chapter 1 - The scoop and digest

From a screenplay by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, Renny Harlin begins a new trilogy.

Madelaine Petsch - Maya
Froy Gutierrez - Ryan
Matúš Lajčák - Scarecrow
Olivia Kreutzova - Dollface
Letizia Fabbri - Pin-Up Girl

Summary

Happy couple Ryan and Maya are on a road trip in Oregon celebrating their five year anniversary.

After their car mysteriously breaks down while at a diner in Venus, they're forced to stay at an Airbnb.

One night, a girl knocks on the door asking for Tamara, who they've obviously never heard of.

What happens next?

Hmmm.

Mid-credits

Maya awakes in a hospital with a man lying next to her.

Because you're here

First off, this isn't a prequel.

So why the FUCK are trio of psychopaths wearing the same masks?

Apart from setting and a few innovations, this goes over very familiar ground and was neither scary or disturbing.

Not even Maya getting her hand stuck on a nail was cringing, and really reminded me of Eden Lake.

Hopefully things will pick up in the next (expected later this year), but I was grossly underwhelmed.

Oh, for reasons unknown, Maya and a stranger use a conveniently placed piano to belt out Moonlight Sonata.

If this is a reference to Resident Evil, then I'm tastier than a Jill sandwich.
