Metro City, a now known Mistake Capital

Final Fight was originally conceived as Street Fighter's sequel (hence working title of Street Fighter '89), with Ryu and Ken as main characters.

Influential classic took multiple cues from wrestling, music and Walter Hill's Streets of Fire.

Name of criminal gang Mad Gear was taken from obscure 1989 overhead racer of same name (ported as LED Storm for home computers).

Anyway, enough with trivia already.

EU - Europe
NA - North America
JP - Japan

Arcade (JP)

Damnd dude laughs during intro (0:48 - 0.50), as per boss fight.

Cool.

Arcade (World)

But in the version most of us smashed, at 0:43 - 0:46 dreadlocks yelps 'Woo Hoo' etc etc.

Changing speech sample is pretty strange, but surely this was just done for effect, right?

Spin on until 38:39 - 38:44 for confirmation of a major goof.

So Damnd threw Belger's voice during intro?

The stupid thing is that he chuckles 'correctly' at 0:56 - 0:58.

Okay, here goes.

Unless stated otherwise, 'whichever' arcade version shown.

The libra (Latin for scales/balance) is where abbreviation for pound (lb) originated.

Ever heard of curious weight alternative ib?

Didn't think so, but these sure have.

World and JP
Predictably, conversions followed suit.

Amiga and Atari ST
SNES (EU and NA) and Super Famicom
Final Fight Guy
Super Famicom and SNES (NA)
X68000
Some grew lb.

Final Fight CD (all regions)
Final Fight One (all regions)
And most unlikely.

C64
Just WOW!

Character select didn't exist in other 8 bit versions.

Instead, bad ass is chosen during profiles.

Spectrum - Enter to cycle through and Space to select.
Amstrad CPC - Esc to cycle through and Space to select.

Why? Who knows?

FYI.

Final Fight One combined profiles with character select.

Jessica

Arcade (JP)

Our girl in uncensored intro has brown hair and light blue earrings.
But she's blonde in-game.

Dye job must be applauded.

For ending, dark blue ear accessories.
SNES (all regions)

Red dress reflects earrings.
One problem.

Yep, she's blonde again.
Mega-CD (EU) and Sega CD

Blue eyes, red dress and red earrings.
Mega-CD (JP)

Colour co-ordination makes no sense.
Final Fight CD (any version)

Note blue earrings.
During improved ending.

They're kinda pink.
Final Fight One (all versions)

Colour co-ordinated (again).
But for ending.

Bright pink lippy and neon blue earrings.
(Wolf whistles).

For this next section (a total head fuck by the way), it's necessary to combine multiple situations (and purposely ignore others).

Arcade (World and JP)

Guy - 5.87 and 158
Cody - 5.97 and 187
Haggar - 6.64 and 297
Final Fight CD (JP) is identical.

But NA and EU found shit incredibly boring.

Guy - 5'9"
Cody - 6' 0"
Haggar - 6' 8"
WTF?

X68000

Like Mega-CD (JP) and Final Fight Guy (JP), profiles detail age, height (cm) and weight (kg).

Guy and Cody are fine, but...

When 202cm and 121kg are converted to feet and pounds, result is 6.63 and 266.8.
Which is different to arcade.

6.64 and 297
More so, format of profiles contradict character select.

Now let's look at specifics.

Guy

Game Boy Advance

5.87ft and 159lb

What's a pound between sprites?

Final Fight Guy (Super Famicom)
When converted to ft and lb, cm and kg are perfect.
But.

Final Fight Guy (NA)
Height: 6'
Weight: 160 lbs.
Holy SHIT!

Cody

Final Fight (SNES - EU and NA)
Height: 5' 11" is 5.92ft
Rather important, considering:

Final Fight (EU, NA and Super Famicom)
5.97
 is same as arcade.
Arcade (all regions)

For intro and character select/profile, Jessica's bloke has two different shades of brown, and sprite has a quiff.

Haggar

Oh boy, where to fucking begin.

Arcade (World and JP)
6.64 and 297
What's this?

Final Fight (SNES - EU and NA) and Final Fight Guy (NA)
6'8" and 267 lbs.
So he's grown 1.6" and lost 30 lbs.

Kick ass.

Confusingly, all versions in character select are identical to arcade.

6.64 and 297
Final Fight One (all regions)
6.60ft.
HA HA HA!

Amiga/Atari ST

Possibly due to limitations of colour palette, but everything to do with braces is wrong (particularly red stripe).

Arcade (all)

No quiff.
Yes quiff.
Brace is brown and pants are black.
No quiff.
Brace and pants are green
No quiff, black hair and moustache.
Issues were fixed in GBA.

Well nearly.

Former street fighter still has a black tache.
Even though we choose palette in extra options, portrait's colour is fixed
But we can choose palette in extra options.

Here's default colour.

Jesus Christ! They couldn't even match it.
Without labouring the point (or going through all ports).

SNES (all versions and Guy)

Humph.

Timeline

Capcom decided to make things bizarrely complicated.

Make no mistake (pun intended), this was no fucking accident.

1989

Arcade (JP), X68000 and Final Fight One (EU, NA and JP).

1990

Final Fight (Super Famicom) and Final Fight Guy (Super Famicom).

Sometime in the 1990's...

Arcade (World), Amiga, Atari ST, Final Fight Guy (NA) and Final Fight (SNES - EU and NA).

Sometime in 1992¹

Mega-CD (EU and JP) and Sega CD.

¹For the first and only time, speech is favoured over text.

Shortly, you'll understand the importance.

Age

Arcade (World) etc etc

Guy - 8-12-1965 (at least 25)
Cody - 4-18-1967 (at least 23)
Haggar - 9-3-1943 (at least 47)

This is acceptable because of ambiguity.

The following spliced age into profiles.

X68000 and Arcade (JP)

Guy - 24
Cody - 22
Haggar - 46

Final Fight CD (JP) does not state DOB.

Guy - 27
Cody - 25
Haggar - 49

Photograph is dated 11 4 1992.
So if we assume game is set beyond this date.

Guy - 26
Cody - 25
Haggar - 49

Profiles in EU and NA followed arcade's example of omitting age.

Now things go to shit.

Final Fight (SNES - EU and NA)

22 and a martialarts expert.
46
Should be at least 23 and 47.

Final Fight Guy (NA)

24
46
Wrong again, as they should be at least 25 and 47.

Final Fight Guy (JP)

24
46
As year is 1990, shit should be 25 and 47.

The stupid thing is that X68000, Arcade (JP) and Final Fight CD (JP) gel.

Miscellany

Arcade (World)

A fact which the newlyーelected mayor and former Street Fighter, Mike Haggar, plans to change.
Floating hyphen?

A new one on me.

My sweet heart since child hood.
Both are not separate words.

So Cody is a martialarts expert and his girl friend Jessica has been kidnapped by the Mad Gear gang.
My deepest grammatical sympathies.

Car trashed by whoever is owned by regular enemy Bred
Oh! My God!!

Check out West Side boss Edi. E.

Nothing immediately sinister.
However, when clouted.

Beard magically grows.
I love a bit of Engrish

Barbecue
Granade
This is exclusive to Rolento boss fight.
Even if barbeque replenished health, object (represented by meat) still wouldn't make any sense.

Incidentally, availability of recovery items (anything from pizza to curry, fruit etc) vary from port to port.

Spectrum (128K only)

Metro City well known crime capital etc etc.
I sense a problem (which Amstrad CPC was also guilty of).

Behold pure fucking laziness.

Bay Area boss is Andore, not Abigail.
Abigail may be just a head swap of Andre the Giant, but correct identification would have softened the blow.

C64

Metro City, well known Crime Capital etc etc.
Comma me.

Amiga/Atari ST

According to assholes who coded unplayable spunk stain, we fought Eddie E.
(Sigh).

Also, Abigail is brought in as regular enemy and Belger is just Boss.

Final Fight CD (all)

During redone intro, Poison wears a lilac-ish cap.
But sprite.

Beret (I think) is black.
G. Oliber (associates Bill Bull and Wong Who).
In reality.

G. Orbier
Final Fight One

Pre-fight portraits and dialogue involving Alpha Guy and Cody and Sodom are recycled from Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Oh, and Rolento.

Trouble is, scar should be face paint.

Unique portraits

Damnd

Dreadlocks wears a prayer bead necklace, which may be reffing Akuma.

Whatever, sprite vehemently disagrees.

Abigail is basically purple, but face should be painted black (insert Rolling Stones ref here) and clobber needed to be white with black splats.

Last by no means least.

Belger

Growth is grey/silver and Mad Gear boss has cyan top, but model features a black beard and white top.

Basically, Sun-Tec were lazy bastards.

And that is indeed that.
