Summary

In Aswan, Egypt, a family discover their home was built on a buried black pyramid.  The cellar contains a sarcophagus with mummified human remains, which come to life, with the father soon killed by a supernatural force.

In Cairo, Katie Cannon is kidnapped by a woman known as the Magician.

Her father Charlie gives chase, but loses them in a sandstorm.

Eight years later, the Cannons have relocated to the home of Larissa's Catholic mother Carmen in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Charlie is contacted by a member of the US Embassy based in Cairo, informing Katie has been found alive in a 3,000 year-old sarcophagus.

They visit her in hospital and 'butterfly' doesn't look too hot, but medical staff immediately discharge catatonic girl.

Yeah, totally realistic.

When Katie's creepy behaviour gets out of hand, Charlie is determined to unwrap mystery.

The Destroyer of Families

First off, Professor Bixler (a derivative of Knowby) shares the same surname as the family in Evil Dead Rise (2023), which is a nod to Denise Bixler, who played Linda in Evil Dead II (1987).

Anyway, premise has absolutely NOTHING to do with title, so they should've called this "Evil Dead Exorcist", which I think most will agree is pretty fucking accurate.

There's some gross body horror to enjoy (including skin removal and Katie’s toenails), but at over two hours, shit drags on way too long.

After Dalia acquires a VHS tape labelled 'Katie', footage reveals the Magician leads an ancient cult who transfer fictional demon Nasmaranian from a spent vessel into a freshly prepared host.

Loud climax boasts all the traditional exorcism tropes, with Dalia transferring Nasmaranian from Katie into Charlie, which blatantly rips off The Conjuring (2013).

Back in Cairo, Larissa and Dalia visit the Magician in prison and manage to sedate her.  Dalia begins chanting, freeing Charlie of possession, while sacrificing convict.
