Making 'sense' of Creed

Despite only having two bouts under heavyweight belt, spin-off series effortlessly upstages the nonsense of Rocky.

Read all about that here.

Important.

Both films are obviously canon and occur in real time.

Creed (2015)

Director and Story - Ryan Coogler
Screenplay - Ryan Coogler and Aaron Covington

In 1998, Mary Anne (Apollo's widow) tells a young Adonis Johnson that his father passed before he was born.

Youth's age is never mentioned.
17 years later.

We know scrap happy adult is definitely in his twenties.
Shit really hits the fan when Rocky visits Paulie's grave.

Paul 'Paulie' Pennino
November 19, 1940
February 22, 2012
How beloved rogue died is unknown.

But whatever, trying to be clever ie. messing with historical ambiguity, has caused a few [coughs], issues.

Rocky IV

At least five years after Rocky fought Apollo behind closed doors, film begins on Paulie's birthday on Wednesday.
New timeline is thusly:

19 November - 25 December 1985

Later that evening, Adrian says their 'anniversary's a week away'.  Because history has been rewritten, 19 November 1985 occurred on a Tuesday, not Wednesday, now making Rocky IV's dialogue wrong.

Rocky II

Because of Paulie's birth and Rocky IV's dialogue, Creed now states Rocky and Adrian tied the knot on 26 November 1976, (a day after Italian Stallion became heavyweight champion of the world).
Don't worry guys, things get even better.

Creed II (2018)

Director - Steven Caple Jr.
Screenplay - Juel Taylor and Sylvester Stallone
Story - Sascha Penn and Cheo Hodari Coker

How old is the product of Apollo's infidelity?

Prior to defeating Danny 'Stuntman' Wheeler, all is revealed.

Tale of the Tape confirms he's 28.
That means whippersnapper was eight in original and 25 as an adult, so born 1990.

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?

Sports report recalls that Drago killed Apollo in 1985 and Rocky defeated you know who in his own backyard later that year.

At least screenplay got something right.

But...

August 17, 1942 - August 31, 1985
Logic suggests Apollo planted seed inside Ms. Johnson sometime in August (off-screen of course), meaning Donnie was born May - early June 1986.

As it is, bitch incubated Donnie for over 3.5 years.

HA HA HA!

Even if 32 was displayed on monitor (impossible because of real time rule), Apollo still died BEFORE Paulie's birthday.

(Shakes head in disbelief).

At time of writing, very little is known about Creed III, but if Clubber Lang's son is the villain in Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut, I have a chilling prediction.

Pain.
