The Ritual (2025) - The scoop and digest

Inspired by Carl Vogel's 1935 book Begone Satan! and unrelated to 2017 and 2024 films of same name, the second to dramatise accounts (after The Exorcism of Anna Ecklund), is written and directed by David Midell.

Al Pacino - Father Theophilus Riesinger
Dan Stevens - Rev. Father Joseph Steiger
Ashley Greene - Sister Rose
Abigail Cowen - Emma Schmidt

Summary

Earling, Iowa
October, 1928

Fathers Steiger and Theophilus take on the case of Emma Schmidt, who may be demonically possessed.

As each ritual passes, her behaviour becomes increasingly more disturbing and even escalates into violence, pushing priests to breaking point.

Before end credits roll, a wall of text is displayed:

Debate persists about the nature of Emma Schmidt's condition: some believe believe her affliction was medical/psychological, while others believe spiritual forces were at play.

After the events of 1928, she reportedly lived out the rest of her life peacefully.

Father Steiger and Father Theophilus continued practicing their faith until their deaths many years later.

Theophilus was profiled in Time magazine and Steiger's notes served as the inspiration for countless articles, books and films.

The 1928 exorcism of Emma Schmidt remains the most thoroughly documented and well-known exorcism in American history.

Innocent blood

The cinematic example of a complete and utter waste of motherfuckin' time.

Scarface played John Milton (an allusion to Paradise Lost) in The Devil's Advocate, with typical flair and flamboyance.

But here, cinema legend is sedate and looks nearly as bored as he did in Hangman.

I'm just disappointed that he didn't lose his shit with Emma and exclaim:

"Satan's got a... GREAT ASS, and you've got your head... all the way up it!"
