Summary
Somewhere near the Turkish/Iranian border, the Defense Innovation Unit (led by U.S. Army Colonel Tim Sattler) have sent A.M.E.L.I.A. (Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android) on a mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist forced into developing a synthetic neurotoxin.
However, she becomes self-aware, kills everybody and escapes Sattler's control.
After Sattler tells Gemma about A, M3GAN reveals she made a backup of her mind in Gemma's smartphone and agrees to help stop A, in exchange for a new physical body.
When A takes Cady at a tech conference, event prompts an improved M to go after the one person she's been programmed to protect.
Hold on to your vaginas
Plot is way too convoluted and screenplay contains few laughs, but bizarre mash up of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Mission: Impossible wasn't DR3ADFUL.
Going further, I believe A's mannerisms are based on Kristanna Loken's T-X in T3: Rise of the Machines (2003).
Towards the end, sequence of M helping Gemma fight Christian's goons (via a chip implanted in her head) is unashamedly Upgrade (2018).
But what really made me laugh is exoskeleton prior to Cady's kidnapping, which couldn't be closer to one of Hajime Sorayama's gynoids.
At Cady's school, we see a poster of Above the Law inside her locker and 12-year-old (15 in real life), now practices aikido.
Nods to Steven Seagal don't stop there, as Gemma inspires niece to attack Christian by saying that she's 'Hard to Kill'.
Cringe.
It's unknown whether main series will continue, but Kate Dolan's spin-off SOULM8TE is scheduled for January next year.
Plot already resembles Wifelike (2022).
