Avatar: The Way of Water - The scoop and digest

How grossly overrated original didn't get successfully sued for plagiarism still blows my mind.

Anyway, James Cameron belatedly returns to Pandora.

Sam Worthington - Jake Sully
Zoe Saldaña - Neytiri
Sigourney Weaver - Kiri
Stephen Lang - Colonel Quaritch
Kate Winslet - Ronal
Cliff Curtis - Tonowari
Jack Champion - Spider
Jamie Flatters - Neteyam
Britain Dalton - Lo'ak
Trinity Jo-Li Bliss - Tuk

Summary

2167 (unofficially).

Jake Sully has raised a family with Neytiri, including adoptive daughter Kiri (born from Grace Augustine's inactive Na'vi avatar) and Colonel Quaritch's feral human son Spider, who was left behind because kids are unable to survive cryo trip back to Earth.

The RDA has since built a new operating base on Pandora and among its new recruits is Quaritch, cloned as a Na'vi and uploaded from memories before his death.

(Sigh).

Baddie leads a bunch of marines resurrected as 'recombinants' on a mission to kill Na'vi insurgency leader Jake.

When Spider is kidnapped, Jake and Neytiri travel to Awa'atlu, where Reef people the Metkayina teach them the tricks of water trade.

Dance in Jurassic Waterworld

A visual masterpiece.  But amazing graphics is the only positive.

World is once again a series of bootleg Roger Dean paintings and incredibly, it's even more boring than predecessor.

Dialogue is weak, story sucked and characters are painfully generic.

Tulkuns smack of Mosasaurus and creatures leaping from water gave off Free Willy vibes.

Nothing happens until the last 30 minutes or so, but despite rehashing Aliens and Titanic, climax delivers moderate satisfaction.

Amrita (capable of stopping the human ageing process) replaces unobtanium, and poachers hunt tulkuns to extract the most valuable substance known to man from their glands.

For those not familiar with John Smith's 1993 2000AD story Firekind:

Gennyo-Leil is host to hexacrin, with ruthless poachers regularly raiding jungle planet to acquire priceless hallucinogen.

It's not the same thing, but poachers are also prevalent in FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue.

Untitled third was shot simultaneously and due 2024.

If that makes a few quid, fourth and fifth will drop in 2026 and 2028 respectively.

Please no.
