Prequels and Sequels of same name

Giving remake, re-imagining or reboot the same title as original is absolutely fine.

Plays and stories inspired by true events also qualify.

But what I'm covering is confusing, maddening, and most of all - royally fucked up.

When necessary, (year) 'precedes' original, and vice versa for sequels.

In some cases, prequels and sequels were brought in the same year.

Gotta laugh (and cry).

Film prequels

Children of the Corn (2020) and (1984)
The Thing (2011) and (1982)

Although we call it the 'original', John Carpenter's body horror is a remake of The Thing from Another World (1951).

Film sequels

Halloween (1978) and (2018)
The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976) and (2014)
Candyman (1992) and (2021)
The African Queen (1951) and (1977)
The Exorcist (1973) and (2023)

Shaft (2000) is a sequel to Shaft (1971).  Shaft (2019) initially prequels Shaft (2000) and becomes a story sequel.

Scream (2022) is the sequel to Scream 4.

Not Scream 5?

Come on now, don't be silly.

Whether there's an explanation remains to be seen.

Miscellany

The Grudge (2020) takes place during events of The Grudge (2002) and The Grudge 2 (2006).

Point-and-click Blade Runner (1997) tells an original story, running parallel and intersecting with Ridley Scott's 1982 classic.

In short, both are sidequels.

Video games

Prequels

Ninja Gaiden (2004) and (1988)
Perfect Dark (2000¹) and (2000²)

¹Game Boy Colour
²N64 original

Perfect Dark Zero (2005) occurs before GBC game in the year 2020.

Sequels

Bionic Commando (1988³) and (2009)
Alien Syndrome (1987) and (2007)
Super Dodge Ball (1987) and (1996)

³NES version

Clock Tower debuted on the Super Famicom in 1995.

The sequel came to PS1 in 1996, but stupid EU title (Clock Tower) makes me wanna punch something, especially since JP version was called Clock Tower 2.

Kid Dracula (1993) is considered to be both a remake and sequel to 1990 Famicom game of same name.

Film prequels

Terminator Salvation (2009)
The Warriors (2005)

Film sequels

From Dusk Till Dawn (2001)
Timecop (1995)
Hulk (2003)
Jurassic Park (1993⁴)
Jurassic Park (1994⁵)
Blade II (2002)
The Thing (2002)
Starship Troopers (2005)
Ghostbusters (2016)
Lassie (2005)

⁴Arcade
⁵Sega CD/Mega CD

Strangest of all is Meet the Robinsons (2007), as GBA version serves as a sequel, but Gamecube, PS2 etc go the other way.

TV prequels

The Little Mermaid (1992-1994)
Taken (2017-2018)

TV sequels

Minority Report (2015)
Limitless (2015)
Training Day (2017)
Starman (1986-1987)
The Exorcist (2016-2018)

Under the rules of this feature, those subbed 'The Series' or 'The Animated Series' obviously don't count.

Comic prequels

One-shot effort Dead Space: Extraction prequels 2009 Wii prequel.

Assassins Creed (2009) is a non-canon prequel to original game, which also bridges the gap between the first and second games.

Serving as an origins story to 2014 film, five-piece series John Wick (2017) explores how our man became the Baba Yaga.

Artisan Entertainment published a very short tie-in prequel comic to Uwe Boll's infamous House of the Dead (2003).

Five-piece series set up Batman: Arkham City (2011).

Darksiders (2010) is a one-shot prequel.

Anthem (2019) prequels game.

Alien: Isolation (2014) is a prequel to video game.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021) prequels Netflix series.

Four-part series Predators prequels film of same name.

Comic sequels

The Lost Boys (2016) is the sequel to 1987 film.

Total Recall (2011) continues the story of 1990 film.

I wouldn't class Highlander (2006-2007) as an absolute sequel, but does start shortly after the events of 1986 film.

Eventually, Duncan MacLeod attempts to free his cousin Connor from the effects of a Dark Quickening.

Issues 10-12 are set after Highlander: Endgame.

Finally

PS1 video game Parasite Eve (1998) is the sequel to Hideaki Sena's 1995 novel, ntbcw 1997 film adaptation of same name.

Jeff Rovin's Mortal Kombat (1995) explores character origins, so counts as a prequel to 1992 arcade.
