Action was a controversial British anthology comic that ran weekly for 87 issues between 14 February 1976 and 12 November 1977.
Jaws cash-in was ever present and I've got a remarkable tale to tell.
Story begins in May 1972, but one-shot prequel (exclusive to 1976 Summer Special) briefly revealed origins.
Great White Death During autumn 1970, the terror of the Caribbean earns the nickname Hook Jaw! |
Jaws: The Revenge - 1987
A shark follows the Brody family from New England to the Bahamas (ha ha ha), which is part of the Caribbean.
Just saying.
Idea may have stemmed from Quint firing a harpoon into Bruce's laughing tackle. |
But what's this boys and girls?
Sharkasaurus (2018) Captain Ahab-esque Reverend is hellbent on sending this demon back to hell. Observe placement of wooden crucifix. |
The Shallows (2016) Nancy learns from GoPro footage that beastie has a hook stuck inside its mouth. |
Hmmm.
But shit gets better, MUCH better.
Jaws 2 - 1978 vs issue 50 - 26 February 1977
Sailboats vs Regatta
A young great white is sedated and planned to be used as an attraction at SeaWorld. Infant dies, igniting the wrath of its mother. |
Issue 24 - 24 July 1976 Hook Jaw is captured and heavily drugged in a lagoon on Paradise Island. Doctor Gelder plans to use him to attract tourists. |
One more.
At the end of issue 20, HJ is swimming outside Gelder's Coral Room restaurant. |
Now for something rather brilliant.
Issue 21 - 3 July 1976 Yep, HJ bursts through the underwater restaurant's observation window. Before it's driven away by a carbon dioxide blast to the eye, gory mayhem ensues. |
YOU ARE NOT FUCKING HALLUCINATING.
Resident Evil - 2002 If Aqua Ring isn't drained in time, Mother Neptune will break on through. |
Miscellany
And.
Issue 24 Steve Redford of the Washington Bugle has a great idea for a photograph. |
Finally.
