Doom (2005) and Doom: Annihilation

Live action efforts weren't great by any stretch, but classics compared to Alone in the Dark, Double Dragon and House of the Dead.

Best move on before rant ensues about those miserable pieces of shit.

Doom (2005)

Andrzej Bartkowiak sends The Rock's team of space marines to investigate a security breach on Mars.

Mission is based on Doom 3, but reeks of Predator.

Also, running time slices cheese and all that's missing is a loaf of bread.

Sarge vs Master Sergeant Thomas Kelly

Dr. Todd Carmack
Goat stumbles across Dr. Steve Willits (right) and quickly regrets doing so.
Scientists are nods to Todd Hollenshead, John Carmack and Tim Willits.

Monsters

Pickings are slim, but whatever.

Zombie
Imp
Dexter Fletcher's Marcus 'Pinky' Pinzerowski becomes...

Ignoring omission of mechanical hind legs, good job.

Oh yeah.

Semper Fi motherfucker.
FPS

Reaper psyches himself up for a change in perspective.
Chainsaw is briefly used against Pinky.
BFG

Here's when shit gets stupid.

Bio Force Gun
v3.14 is not only Pi, but 314 is the IQ of Commander Keen.

So displaying 'Big F***ing Gun' on computer monitor is apparently too vulgar, right?

But towards the end.

Sarge states 'Big Fucking Gun!'
See the problem here?

I wouldn't mind if film didn't contain expletives, but...

All they had to do was give dialogue responsibility of humorous reveal.

Why is energy projectile BLUE and not green?
Classic Doom
Their choice of course, but still weird.

Miscellany

Beating heart vs id logo

Definitely rings a bell.

Just before Reaper and Sarge lock horns, a lit board is seen.

John Coates, Robert Sutherland, David Reeves, Ying Lee, Alfredo Alvarez, Alan Crow, Lawrence Feldman and Richard Swift.
I haven't bothered going crazy over this, but at the time, David Reeves was the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Richard Swift was a singer-songwriter.

Two more.

An imp (later revealed to be Carmack), gets trapped inside nano wall.
This was either done for effect, or a nod to Doom 3's take on the Face of Mars.
This is so random, it's probably coincidence.

A zombified Goat headbutts reinforced glass several times, eventually killing himself.
Please note blood smear.

During automated sequence, fat zombie does the same thing (but doesn't die).
WHAT?

Doom: Annihilation (2019)

This gets a lot of hate, which I think is unfair.

Yes the acting in blatant Aliens knock-off is largely terrible, but direct-to-video reboot is not the load of Phobos people would have you believe.

Although id and Bethesda declined the offer to be involved, they wished the production team godspeed.

Filmmakers weren't allowed to use anything from Doom (2016) and instead of Union AeroSpace Corporation, UAC stands for United Aerospace Corporation.

However, Malcolm Betruger (in name only) was hijacked from Doom 3.

Rather predictably, actor looks fuck all like video game counterpart.

Heroine Joan Dark is a cross between Ripley and Vasquez.
Ignoring Joan of Ark, name could be reffing Joanna Dark of Rare's Perfect Dark series.

Helmets HUD come complete with map.
Carmack needn't worry about being human, because he's already past that.

Hmmm, who should I attack first before getting blown away?
Oh shit...
Unlike Hollywood adaptation, Imps throw fireballs (as per novel series and Doom 3).

HADOKEN!
Anonymous Demon Overlord does absolutely nothing, but digital creation earns my respect.
So did BFG 9000 piss me off?

No, because green is the colour.

Cool.

Chainsaw is given some love against zombies.
While not explicitly stated, Captain Savage produces a Super Shotgun.
Computer AI is called Daisy.

(Ahem).

I found this hilarious.

Dude defiantly exclaims "Fuck this, I'm too young to die."

HA HA HA!

Not as good, but...

"I'm the ultra nightmare motherfuckers."

If intentional, screenplay combines two difficulty levels.

Ultra-violence and Nightmare!

William J. Blazkowicz is the protagonist of Wolfenstein.
Serial number of Flora Trellis R1-P11 is 0080MIXOM BFG-657-JK.
Tool manufacturer Mixom debuted in Doom 3 and other doesn't require explanation.

Finally.

This very cool shot in Hell pays homage to Don Ivan Punchatz's original cover art.
In the unlikely event you need reminding.

Ending leaves gate open for another, but I'm not holding my breath.

Doom: Reference Me Plenty

Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money inspired franchise's title.

Tom Cruise's Vincent is asked "What you got in there [cue case]?"

"In here? Doom."

You see, Balabushka is opponent's worst nightmare.

Legacy

Doom II arcade featured in Grosse Point Blank (1997), but was just a prop built specifically for film.

Less famously, original is played in Sudden Death (1995) and Breakdown (1997).

Original cover art

Don Ivan Punchatz's only work for the video game industry would be reused for the global market and remains just as recognisable today as it did in 1993.
It was even used as the cover in the first book of novel series Knee-deep in the Dead.
To keep development and budget costs down, late artist reduced his fee and also refused a percentage of game's profits - blissfully unaware of how successful FPS would become.
Oh yeah, geezer also designed logo.
Doom 3
Doom (2016)
Doom Eternal
Mick Gordon Doom (2016) - Rip and Tear
Icon of Sin

Final boss of Doom II is just a wall texture.
Of course, the real enemy hides within - John Romero.

Doom 3
Billygoat Burger logo is probably more of a nod to Baphomet.
This makes sense, as design of biomechanical head had pagan demon in mind.
Doom (2016)
If sweet spot is hit, a spawn cube will be launched.
Cute.

Doom Eternal
Just... WOW!

After armour and body parts are destroyed, titan falls after Crucible is driven and snapped off inside brain.
Commander Keen

Opening blurb from Invasion of the Vorticons.

Billy Blaze, eight year-old genius, working diligently in his backyard clubhouse has created an interstellar starship from old soup cans, rubber cement and plastic tubing.  While his folks are out on the town and his babysitter has fallen asleep, Billy travels into his backyard workshop, dons his brother's football helmet, and transforms into...

Commander Keen--Defender of the Earth!

In his ship, the bean-with-bacon megarocket, Keen dispenses galactic justice with an iron hand!

As an example, he waved Goodbye, Galaxy!
Doom (2016)
As skull is spiked, this is more than likely also a nod to John Romero's head.
Oh, gotta love the product placement of Doom.
Ha ha ha!

But more interesting is Ten Dollars Left to Spend, an Inspirational Tale by Ugoh Tarnim (between Great Gutsby and Demon Farm).

The easy part.

Author is an anagram of Hugo Martin (id's Creative Director).

But what of title?

As far as I can tell, it stems from an interview he gave to Shacknews in March 2017, re: crafting a 'cinematic experience'.

Excerpt in full.

"All of it has one goal in mind: Doom 2016 is doing its damnedest to make you feel strong. If we had 10 dollars, we'd spend eight of it on combat, a dollar on something else, and one dollar left for the story. All of that money would be spent on making you feel like a badass."

Next time, I'll be scrutinising live-action.

Try and contain your excitement.
