Shazam! Fury of the Gods - The scoop and digest

David F. Sandberg returns as director.

Zachary Levi and Asher Angel - Billy Batson
Adam Brody and Jack Dylan Grazer - Freddy Freeman
Ross Butler and Ian Chen - Eugene Choi

Summary

At the Acropolis Museum in Athens, two of Atlas's daughters Kalypso and Hespera steal a magical staff and take it to the imprisoned Wizard, forcing him to reactivate its powers.

We learn Wiz killed their father, hence revenge mission.

They kidnap Freddy and trap everybody by placing a dome over Philadelphia.

Hespera finds a golden apple, which has the power to restore their realm.  However, Kalypso summons a huge dragon and goes rogue.

Mid-credits

Billy meets Emilia Harcourt and John Economos, as the Justice Society recruits its latest member.

Post-credits

Thaddeus Sivana encounters Mister Mind (again).

Seeds of boredom

Not the worst, but generic sequel is still painfully average.

Mirren and Liu's rubbish villains largely squabble and screenplay relies on DC jokes for the laughs.

Oddly, we get a 'family' reference to Fast and Furious.

After Kalypso plants the apple in a stadium growing the Tree of Life, numerous creatures from Greek mythology are unleashed, including manticores, harpies, minotaurs and cyclops.

Give me the stop-motion genius of Ray Harryhausen over CG any day of the week.

Maybe we're not meant to, but I couldn't help comparing dome principle to The Simpsons Movie.

Billy's paediatrician Dr. Dario Bava is presumably an amalgam of Dario Argento and Mario Bava.

Also, comic series Professor Dario Bava concerns a Van Helsing type that goes around fighting monsters and vampires.

Towards the end, a building displays Fulci, as in Lucio Fulci.

Cute.

Shame film wasn't.
