Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - The scoop and digest

Jeff Fowler returns to director's chair.

Ben Schwartz - Sonic
James Marsden - Tom
Jim Carrey - Dr. Robotnik
Idris Elba - Knuckles
Colleen O'Shaughnessey - Tails

Summary

Months after being exiled on Mushroom Planet, Robotnik has gone all Cast Away.

Yeah, his version of Wilson the volleyball is a rock named Stone.

Knuckles the Echidna forms an alliance with fruit loop so he can exact revenge on Sonic for destroying his tribe.

Back on Earth, Tails and Sonic endeavour to find the legendary Master Emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

Mid-credits

In the aftermath of Super Sonic reducing Robotnik's giant robot to scrap, the Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.) search for moustache who is nowhere to be seen.

A research facility housing Project: Shadow is shown.

Acceptable

Flashier yes, but inferior to original.

2 hours is way too long and live-action contingent (apart from obviously Robotnik) are surplus to requirements.

I know it's done on purpose, but Sonic not using super speed to prevent or escape perilous situations just annoyed me.

Also, whose idea was it for Robotnik to become Magneto?

Still, it's not all bad.

Running time is littered with references, and Master Emerald's booby-trapped tomb (impressively recreated as Labyrinth Zone) will make fans smile.

Although outcome of end boss sequence was predictable, I was entertained.

Forget silly dance fight in Siberia and stupid sub-plot of undercover operation in Hawaii, the weirdest thing was Sonic saving Knuckles (trapped underneath debris) from drowning.

Principle is identical to Murtaugh releasing Riggs in Lethal Weapon 4, even down to 'one, two, three' countdown.

Just WHAT?

Due to Carrey recently announcing his retirement from acting, the prospect of third has been thrown into serious doubt.

If it does come to fruition, events are likely to follow Sonic Adventure 2.
