The Shining - Frozen Solitude

Before the main event, let's look at how others sporadically referenced Stephen King's original novel.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

The Adjudicator stays in Room 217 at the Continental.

The Aviator

At the Cocoanut Grove, Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprico) tells Thelma the waitress his hotel room number is 217.

Going deeper, the character Horace M. Derwent was based on the real Howard Hughes.

Finally.

Life Is Strange
Redrum and 217.
The Shining (1980)

It's finally time to give Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece the respect it deserves.

I'm biased of course, but good luck finding better.

Elevator

The crew filled compartments with hundreds of gallons of fake blood and set up four cameras, each equipped with a different lens and speed.
In an old interview, Kubrick's long-time personal assistant Leon Vitali revealed the scene was so nerve-racking for him, he walked off set before they started shooting.
Although he was very happy with the result (which took a year to film) - what a shame.

Typewriter

It took months for Kubrick's secretary Margaret Adams to type 500 pages of 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy' over and over again.
Whether intentional or not, typos (such as PLay) made sequence even more chilling.
For international versions, she had to repeat feat in Italian, German, Spanish and French.
Surprised she didn't go insane.

Redrum

Danny's imaginary friend Tony isn't given much explanation in the film, but in the book, character is his adult self from the future.
Here, he's only a high-pitched voice, using Danny as a vessel to speak to his parents.
Evil presence eventually possesses wee lad, forcing him to write 'Murder' backwards in lipstick on their door.

Room 237

Halloran warns Danny to give shit a very wide berth.
Let me tell you an interesting story.

On 9 April, 1978, the hotel's general manager Tad Michel (on behalf of area operator Richard Kohnstamm), wrote to Kubrick asking if he could change the number from 217 to 237, 247 or 257, as neither existed at the Timberline Lodge.  Dick was concerned that once the film was released locally, guests would be afraid of being chased by the bloated body of "bath-tub lady".

Kubrick didn't kick up a fuss and chose...

Ironically, 237 became the most requested room number.

Who knows?

Rip offs

Yes, I'm not quite done yet.

James Horner

Known for 'borrowing' music, he often reused his own scores for other films, but also incorporated and reworked themes from classical composers (without giving credit).

Aliens

The meat of main title theme is virtually identical to Aram Khachaturian's Gayane Ballet Suite (Adagio), which was previously used in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

He combined cues of Wall Street and the Wolves and The Final Confrontation from Wolfen for Ripley's Rescue.

Okay, here's the thing.

As cast is displayed and title card eventually forms, an excerpt of Krzysztof Penderecki's The Dream of Jacob, aka The Awakening of Jacob is repeated.

Haunting composition is first heard during Danny's vision of blood elevator.
