Aquaman - The scoop the digest

Horror veteran James Wan literally takes the superhero plunge and brings the sixth in DCEU.

Jason Momoa - Arthur Curry/Aquaman
Amber Heard - Princess Mera
Willem Dafoe - Vulko
Patrick Wilson - King Orm
Nicole Kidman - Anna/Queen Atlanna
Dolph Lundgren - King Nereus
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II - Manta

Summary

At Amnesty Bay, lighthouse keeper Tom Curry's fancy piece Anna gives birth to Arthur.

In the present day, Mera tells Arthur King Orm is about to declare war on the surface and the only way to prevent half brother from becoming Ocean Master is to dethrone ass.

Meanwhile, a vengeful Manta is out to bring Arthur down for causing father's death on board submarine.

Mid credits

A wounded Black Manta is found floating on driftwood by Dr. Stephen Shin.

To recap, he was briefly seen during news report, who concluded Orm's tidal waves were the result of Atlantean attack - not natural disaster.

Shin's lab is plastered with newspaper clippings of Aquaman and Atlantis.

In exchange for spilling where Atlantean tech was got, Shin promises to help Manta find Aquaman.

Batshit bonkers

At nearly 2 hours 30, bloated affair is stupid, plagued with run of the mill action and corny dialogue.

But having said that, James Wan manages to deliver chaotic entertainment and therefore - gets my seal of approval.

Right near the start, Aquaman recovers from grenade round and nonchalantly states "Ow!"

Tone is set, and doesn't improve.

Apart from muscles, Momoa proves he's also got charisma.

Chemistry between Arthur and Mera never works and unlikely couple inevitably having a snog against cheesy music and pyrotechnics is cringing.

While applying finishing touches to armour, Black Manta throws in a Jaws ref.

"I think I'm gonna need a bigger helmet."

I'd suggest search for the lost trident is a nod to Indiana Jones.

Villains' costumes and hairstyles are ridiculous and Wilson exudes little or no menace.

Dafoe's Vulko training a young Arthur in flashback smacks of Highlander.

CGI is head and shoulders above previous abominations and although climatic battle royale is nothing original, Aquaman standing on and commanding a Godzilla-esque behemoth is pretty spectacular.

Darkest sequence comes when Aquaman and Mera fight Trench (humanoid sea creatures) and only time when blood is spilled.

Arthur and Orm duel in a gladiatorial arena with octopus geeing up partisan crowd by banging bongos.

Just go with it.

If talking crustaceans and great white sharks used as makeshift steeds isn't enough, a red-haired Ivan Drago riding a giant seahorse is worth the entrance fee alone.
