Midsommar - The scoop and digest

Ari Aster is out to prove that Hereditary was no fluke.

Florence Pugh - Dani
Jack Reynor - Christian
William Jackson Harper - Josh
Vilhelm Blomgren - Pelle
Will Poulter - Mark
Ellora Torchia - Connie
Archie Madekwe - Simon

Summary

After bipolar sister commits an elaborately staged murder-suicide with her parents via carbon monoxide poisoning, Dani suffers severe emotional trauma.

With friends not particularly keen, estranged boyfriend Christian agrees to take Dani to Hälsingland for a midsummer celebration that only occurs every ninety years.

Residents welcome 'family' with open arms, but as festivities grow increasingly more disturbing, idyllic setting becomes a hallucinogenic nightmare.

Compelling trip

Excellent cinematography, gorgeous sound design and Florence Pugh's amazing performance rescues self-indulgent follow up.

Gory imagery can hit you with a sledgehammer, but 'break-up' film is basically an impressive portrayal of mental fragility.

Once drugs kick in, it's quite brilliant how miscellany comes 'alive' and scenery warps.

Gamers may ref effect to Mode 7.

(Laughs).

Will Poulter delivers the laughs, but humour sensibly peters out once shit hits the fan.

Candle burns slowly, and doesn't really ignite until about an hour.

But to be fair, it's not boring.

My main problem is set up makes it very predictable of how things are going to play out and it's way too similar to the original The Wicker Man.

Even ending is ripped off, as sacred temple (yellow teepee) is burned down.

Homage? Whatever.

Christian is placed inside a disemboweled bear, instantly reminding me of infamously bad Nic Cage remake.

Thankfully, soon to be sacrificed geezer has already been immobilised by unknown substance, eliminating the possibility of him laying out a cultist.

But wait, premise eerily mirrors 2003 Danish horror Midsommer.

To get over his sister's suicide, Christian (honestly) and friends go to Sweden for a certain festival, but supernatural presence poops on party.

America reset locale and remade it as Solstice in 2008.

Ignoring ghostly antagonist, what the fuck man?
